As many as 40 sheep were found dead inside Veterinary College farm of Birsa Agriculture University (BAU) here, with officials saying that it could be an attack by wild animals.
"Nail scratches of animals were found on the walls. They could be of hyenas or leopards or other hunting animals, which scaled the six-foot brick wall and attacked the sheep flock on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday," BAU Director of Research D K Singh Dron said here today.
34 sheep died immediately after the attack, while six among 34 other injured sheep died by 10 AM today, he said.

Forest officials have inspected the attack site but it was difficult to conclude whether it was an attack by a pack of hyenas, the BAU director said.
"I was a student of BAU in 1971. I have never seen such incident till date," Dron said, adding the authorities are taking more precautionary measures for the enclosures where sheep are reared.
