9-year girl raped in Barpeta; culprit absconding

A nine-year old girl was allegedly raped and critically injured by her neighbour here, police said today.

On July 16, the neighbour lured the girl for playing carrom in his house during afternoon and then allegedly raped her, they said.

"The condition of the girl was critical and the family members wanted to keep it a secret. When the condition of the girl became more critical, she was taken to Guwahati," a police officer said.

An FIR was lodged by the members of 'Mahila Samiti' of that area and the culprit is absconding now.

The alleged rapist has been identified as Karuna Das.
