An University Teachers' body today called a ceasework by teachers in Jadavpur University on April 6 in protest against the Centre's alleged move to privatise and commercialise higher education sector.

All Bengal University Teachers' Association (ABUTA) JU Convenor Goutam Maity said, the teachers' ceasework has been called to safeguard the interest of public-funded universities and press for the withdrawal of the graded autonomy regulation of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Maity alleged the graded autonomy was aimed at taking away the right to education of common people.

He said the Centre was trying to commercialise and privatise higher educational institutions in the country and vest their functioning power with itself.

He demanded the state-aided university teachers be given Dearness Allowance on par with those of central universities.

He called for repealing the West Bengal Universities and Colleges (Administration and Regulation) Act, 2017 calling it a "black act".
