Army, central forces deployed in Karbi Anglong district

Additional personnel from army and central forces were deployed in Karbi Anglong district to assist the Assam police today following the gunning down of Police Superintendent Nitya Nanda Goswami and his PSO there in an encounter with KPLT ultras.

The army and the central forces would assist in nabbing the extremists, a Home Department statement said, while the Union Home Ministry requested for deployment of additional five units of CRPF COBRA force for intensified combing operations.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi also reviewed the law and order situation with Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla, senior civil and police officials and decided to immediately send Additional Director General of Police (Law and order) A P Rout and ADGP (Special Task Force) to Hamren.
 

The two ADGPs will take stock of the situation there to launch combing operations against the extremist group, the statement said.

Assam Director General of Police Khagen Sarma visited Hamren during the day to take stock of the situation and directed that coordinated action be taken against the extremists.

The state government also announced an ex-gratia grant of Rs 20 lakh each to the next of kin of the SP and his PSO Ratul Nunisa, it said.

Meanwhile, the government appointed Assam Police Training College, Dergaon, Commandant Debojit Deori as the new SP, Hamren, it said.
