The average spot price of electricity in the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) fell a modest 2 per cent to Rs 2.52 per unit in January as against the preceding month.

"At Rs 2.52 per unit, the average market clearing price (MCP) for January 2016 declined marginally by 2 per cent over last month," Indian Energy Exchange said in a statement.

In January, power generators remained bullish about the spot market as sell bids for the month on an aggregated basis were 5,386 million units (MUs), about 8 per cent up over the previous month. Demand, however, remained subdued with aggregated purchase bids at 3,449 MUs, up 2 per cent over the previous month, it said.

Some 94 MUs were traded on a daily average basis, with a total cleared volume of 2,929 MUs, 2 per cent less than 2,987 MUs last month.

"About 152 MUs were curtailed in January 2016, about 3 times the volume curtailed in December (54 MUs), mainly due to constraints in import of power in the northern region with tripping of one circuit of 400 kv Phagi-Bassi and one circuit of 765kv Gwalior-Agra transmission lines due to foggy conditions," it explained.

"The ER-NR and WR-NR interconnections were congested 32 per cent of the time and the ER-SR and WR-SR interconnections were congested 50 per cent of the time during the month. Ideal market situation of one grid, one price was seen at three instances over the month - on January 14, 30 and 31," it said.
