A top Odisha police officer today said Naxals were now targeting innocent locals in the insurgency-hit areas in the state as forces have successfully contained Naxalite activities throughout 2015.

DGP KB Singh today said after a high-level performance review meeting, "We took stock of the Naxal activities in Odisha and are quite satisfied with our effort in 2015 and our performance was very good."

The meeting was chaired by Home Secretary Asit Tripathy.

However, with this development the red rebels have become desperate and morally down and hence were targeting innocent villagers in left wing extremist (LWE)- hit areas in southern Odisha, Singh said.

"They have lost support of local people as many villagers surrendered before the administration pledging not to support the ultras," the DGP said.

The meeting discussed in details on the strategy to be adopted in order to stop civilian attacks, an official said.
