The Tripura unit of BJP will not forge an alliance with any political party in the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections scheduled in May, a top party functionary said today.
"We have decided to put up candidates in all 28 seats of the tribal council and we are consolidating our organisation in the tribal compact areas.
"A committee has been formed to make a list of eligible candidates from which the state unit will make a final list," party state president Sudhindra Dasgupta said.
He said, BJP national president Amit Shaha would arrive here on April 24 for a two-day visit in view of the TTAADC elections and address some public rallies.
Dasgupta alleged though the tribal council was set up about three decades ago, tribals living in the council areas remained backward and poverty stricken due to bad governance and added, the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Front had governed the tribal council for long.
The TTAADC came into being in 1985 under the sixth schedule of the Constitution to safeguard economic, political and cultural interests of the tribals of the state who formed one third of the state's population. The tribal council constitutes two third area of Tripura.
Dasgupta also said BJP has demanded direct funding to the tribal council bypassing the state government to speed up developmental works and inclusion of Kokbarak, the tribal language, in the eighth schedule of the Constitution.
