Bus driver gets 1 year in jail for rash driving

A local court here has awarded one-year jail term to a bus driver for rash and negligent driving, resulting in the death of four passengers in the district in 2006.

Judicial Magistrate, 1st Class Kathua, Renu Dogra yesterday awarded the jail term to Kuldeep Singh of R S Pura in Jammu. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2000 on him.

According to the prosecution, on March 10, 2006, the Kathua police station received an information that Kuldeep Singh was driving a bus in a very rash, careless and negligent manner while travelling from Jammu towards Kathua.

When he reached Sahar Khad on the national highway, Singh tried to overtake a tractor and hit it. As a result, the bus rolled down a bridge, resulting in the death of four passengers, the prosecution claimed.
 

After hearing arguments of both the sides, the court observed that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and evidences of eyewitnesses also corroborated with the medical evidences.

The accused is proved to be guilty and liable to be convicted, it said.
