The Moga district administration today said that no case can be registered against the proprietors of the company which owned the bus from which a teenaged girl was pushed to her death even as her family members refused to perform her last rites unless such a step was taken.
However, the administration said it was ready to pay Rs 20 lakh compensation to the girl's family and provide a government job to the girl's mother who, too, was pushed off the bus along with her daughter after the teenager was molested by the bus's staff.
"If a person has no knowledge about the crime, then how can he be booked? And it is also not legally possible," said Moga Deputy Commissioner, Parminder Singh Gill who, along with DIG AS Chahal and SSP JS Khehra tonight held a press conference here in connection with the bus incident.

The victim's father and opposition parties are insisting on the registration of a case against Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, co-owner of Orbit Aviation, on board whose bus the alleged incident took place, and cancellation of the company's bus permits.
Three days after the incident, the victim's family has refused to perform the last rites of the girl till action is taken against the bus owners.
Gill assured the family that strict action would be taken against the accused. "They (victim's family) will get justice," he said. Gill appealed to the victim's family to cremate her body, which has been lying in the mortuary.
The district administration said it was ready to pay compensation of Rs 20 lakh. The victim's family will also get Rs 6 lakh compensation from the SC commission.
"We have also assured them that the girl's mother -- who was injured in the incident -- would be given a job as per her qualification," Gill said.
The victim's father has sought security for the family citing a threat to their lives. He has claimed that they are under political pressure to "hush up" the matter and settle for a compromise.
He has also sought a written assurance from the authorities that no harm would be brought to the family.
The victim's father is sticking to his demand for registration of a case against Badal and cancellation of road permits of Orbit Aviation, which owned the bus from which the deceased and her mother were thrown out after being molested.
Meanwhile, Badal this evening ordered all buses of Orbit Aviation off the roads.
