Chhattisgarh has received an award for its initiatives and schemes to enhance horticulture crop production.

The state has been honoured with the 'Horticulture Leadership Award 2017'.

Agriculture Minister Brijmohan Agrawal received the award from Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki at the 10th Global Agriculture Leadership Summit held in New Delhi yesterday, a government official here said today.

Despite its formation just 17 years ago, Chhattisgarh has emerged as a rapidly-developing state and it has evolved new strategies for promoting mass cultivation of horticulture- based crops during this period, the official quoted Agrawal as saying at the event.

The area under horticulture crop cultivation, which was 2.01 lakh hectare in 2004-05, has increased to 8.3 lakh hectares now in the state, he said.

Similarly, the horticulture crop production has reached 98.33 lakh metric tonne now from 17.56 lakh metric tonne in 2004-05, Agrawal said.

Step by step new policies were drafted to boost horticulture production, he said.

To increase the income of farmers and make them self dependent, vegetable production and livestock rearing are being promoted among them, the minister added.
