Chhattisgarh: Woman charred to death as fire breaks out

A woman was charred to death and another person injured in a major fire that broke out in shops at the famous temple town of Dongargarhin Chhattisgarh's Rajnandgaon district today, police said.

Atleast 14 shops were gutted in the incident.

"The fire broke out in the shopslocated at the base of Maa Bamleshwari Devi temple hill this afternoon," a local police official told PTI.

As per preliminary investigation, the fire broke out due to explosion in the gas cylinder in the shop.

Gradually, the blaze spread to 14 nearby shops, he said.

However, the exact reason of fire was yet to be ascertained, he added.
 

Firetenders were rushed to the site and it took around one-and-an-half-hour to douse the flames, he added.

"A woman identified as Jhiran Bai (60) was charred to death while another Manoj (40) sustained burn injuries in the incident," the official added.

The injured has been rushed to a local hospital, he said.

Maa Bamleshwari TempleDongargarh, located around 110 kms away from the state capital Raipur, is of great spiritual importance and the people of Chhattisgarh consider it as a 'tirth' (pilgrim).

The temple is situated on a hilltop ofaround 500m.

On May 5, around 50 shops located on the stairs of the hilltop temple were guttedin a majorfire.
