Press Trust of India Indore
Swift intervention by district authorities and an NGO prevented a child marriage here today.

On receiving a tip-off that a 14-year-old girl was to get married today in Nagin Nagar area, authorities swung into action and reached the area along with activists of the NGO, Childline, yesterday.

They met the family members of the minor girl and convinced them not to go ahead with the marriage plan, said Sanjay Bhardwaj, a senior officer of Women and Child Development Department.

The family members gave an undertaking that they won't get her married till she turns 18, the legal age for marriage for girls, he said.

However, the girl feared her parents would not keep their words and get her wedded before she turned 18. The minor expressed a wish not to say with her parents, after which she was shifted to a government-run home, Bhardwaj added.
