Amidst widespread protests over the Cauvery issue and the anti-Sterlite struggle in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister K Palaniswami today apprised Governor Banwarilal Purohit of the ongoing agitations.
Palaniswami was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar, and held discussions with the Governor for about 30 minutes at the Raj Bhavan here.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Palaniswami said the delegation apprised the Governor of the ongoing protests in Tamil Nadu to Purohit's 'satisfaction.'
"We met the Governor and apprised him in detail about the protests happening in Tamil Nadu. He said he was satisifed (with the government's explanation)," he said.
Asked if the issue of constituting the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) figured in the discussions, the Chief Minister said: "the Governor sought information on the Cauvery water issue and many other protests, and we gave a satisfactory response."
"He asked about the prevailing problems in Tamil Nadu and we gave due explanation. He was satisified," Palaniswami said.
The discussions also revolved around supply of drinking water in the backdrop of the summer season, he said.
"The Governor keenly listened to us and said he was satisfied," the Chief Minister said.
Today's meeting was held in the backdrop of the Cauvery issue continuing to rock Tamil Nadu for the fourth consecutive day today with protests by DMK and other opposition parties, seeking forming of CMB by the Centre.
Two outfits had opposed IPL matches scheduled here, even as Tamil Nadu is bracing for tomorrow's bandh call by the DMK-led Opposition, which has been supported by others, including opposition affiliated trade-unions.
Anti-Sterlite protests also continued in Tuticorin district, with the locals insisting on closure of the copper smelter plant, citing health concerns.
Various political parties have supported the citizens' demand for closing down the plant.
