A construction worker from Odisha suffered serious injuries in the leg after being struck by a stray bullet, police today said.
Police said Muniram (30) was helping in concrete packing of a bridge across the Vaigai river close to the Vaigai dam which was being widened, when the stray bullet hit him at 07:30 this morning.
Construction workers said the bullet hit him near the ankle and and he fell down screaming. Immediately, he was rushed to the Government Hospital at Theni.
Police are investigating whether the bullet came from a shooting range of the forest department near the Vaigai dam in this district, where forest personnel are being given training in target practice.
Hospital authorities said the bullet had broken a bone, and he had to be operated upon. His condition is stable, they said.
Police Superintendent Mahesh visited the site of the incident.
