Criminals flee police custody

Press Trust of India New Delhi
Two suspected criminals managed to flee from police custody in two separate incidents in Delhi.

In the first incident, the man fled after he managed to unlock his handcuffs and in the other, the criminal fled after climbing the wall of the police station.

A man, Sheikh Rajav, was caught on Thursday while allegedly committing a theft at a boutique in Prasad Nagar.

His three associates fled from there and Sheikh was being taken to Tis Hazari court, the police said.

Before being taken to the court, he was taken to Lady Hardinge for a medical examination. On the way to court in an autorickshaw it slowed down near Azad Market due to a traffic jam, police said.

Taking advantage of the situation, Sheikh removed his handcuffs and fled into a crowded lane. An inspector and constable, who were accompanying him, ran after him, but could not trace him. A case has been registered at Bara Hindu Rao police station.

In the other incident, a man named Vishal was arrested in Farsh Bazar. Since Farsh Bazar police station does not have a lock-up, he was kept at the lock-up in Anand Vihar police station.

On Thursday, he was brought to the duty officer's room to complete some paperwork. While the formalities were on, Vishal scaled the wall of the police station and fled. He was followed but could not be traced, police said.

Action against the erring policemen is also being initiated, they added.
