West Bengal unit of the BJP on Tuesday said the party has no connection with the deaths allegedly caused by a panic that NRC could be implemented in the state, as alleged by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
BJP state president Dilip Ghosh claimed that even dengue deaths were being labelled as caused by the panic over the NRC.
Ghosh, however, maintained that if voted to power, they would implement the National Register of Citizens in the state to get rid of "Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators".
"We did not create any panic over the NRC. It is unfair to blame us. The BJP did not conduct the NRC in Assam. It has been done as per the order of the Supreme Court, he told reporters here.
Banerjee, also Trinamool Congress supremo, on Monday accused the BJP of creating panic over NRC and it has led to six deaths in the state.
"Dengue deaths are being labelled as death over NRC panic. The family members of the deceased have also accepted it as they have been promised of Rs 2 lakhs by the state government and the TMC," he said.
But, he said, "We stick to our stand that we would weed out Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators by conducting NRC in West Bengal if voted to power."
However, Hindu refugees have nothing to worry about as they would be given citizenship under the amended citizenship Act, the BJP leader said.
"So, the panic is only among the illegal infiltrators," he said.
TMC has asked the BJP to clarify the exclusion of a large number of Hindus in the final NRC list in Assam ahead of the saffron party president Amit Shah's scheduled visit to the city to address a seminar on the issue.
