With an eye on election, Delhi Government today granted permission for carrying out development works in 133 unauthorised colonies with immediate effect.

Delhi's Revenue Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said all hurdles have been removed to initiate infrastructure development in the 133 unauthorised colonies.

He said development works are on in "war footing" at 91 such settlements, which partly came up on land belonging to Forest department and Archaeological Survey of India.

The city government had announced regularisation of 895 colonies in September last year out of which 312 settlements were on private land, while 583 colonies came up on government land.

Delhi government had issued provisional regularisation certificates to over 1,639 unauthorised colonies ahead of assembly polls in 2008.

The then Dikshit government, while distributing the certificates, had promised to regularise the colonies if Congress came to power for the third term.

Around 40 lakh people reside in the unauthorised colonies and they are considered as traditional support base of Congress.
