Delhi Social Welfare Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam today inspected Lampur Beggar Home and Aasha Deep Mentally Challenged Home at Narela to take stock of the facilities.
According to a statement, the minister directed officials to refurbish and renovate the beggar home complex, popularly known as Sewa Sadan, within three months so that inmates from Asha Kiran, a rehabilitation home for mentally challenged, can be relocated here.
Asha Kiran home is currently accommodating 1,050 mentally challenged inmates despite having a capacity of 500 people, the statement said.
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) had during an inspection in February last year found several irregularities such as unsanitary conditions, overcrowding and poor upkeep of inmates at Asha Kiran home.
"On the orders of the High Court, about 150 inmates from Asha Kiran were shifted to other homes but more need to be shifted. Lampur Beggar Home is vacant for the last 10-12 years which can be utilised for this purpose," the statement said.
Gautam also inspected a site of the social welfare department with an area of 12.50 acres at Mamurpur village in Narela to check how the land can be best utilized for the welfare of the deprived and the needy.
"The minister said that Lampur can be best suited for inmates as it covers the huge green area and equipped with clean environment. He also gave instructions to provide inmates with the high level medical facilities equipped with machines so that they can be treated at the premise only," the statement said.
