A head constable of the Delhi Police, who was escorting an under-treatment prisoner at a north Delhi hospital , died under mysterious circumstances, police said today.

Rajender Kumar, 49, was found with a bullet wound on his head, inside a ward of Rajan Babu Institute of Pulmonary Medicine and Tuberculosis (RBIPMT) at GTB Nagar where he was deployed to keep watch on the under trial prisoner Manoj, said a senior police officer.

He was found motionless by one of his colleagues in the afternoon. The doctors declared him dead, he said.

Kumar was posted with 3rd Battalion of the Delhi Armed Police that is responsible for escorting prisoners when they are out of jail for treatment, court appearances and other purposes.

Investigation is going on and all possible angles including suicide and murder are being probed, he said.

According to police, Kumar and his companion Sitaram, an assistant sub-inspector, were keeping watch on Manoj who was undergoing tuberculosis treatment at the hospital.

Sitaram went for some work and handed over his pistol to Kumar since the prisoner was in the ward.

Later, he heard a gunshot and returned back to find Kumar with gunshot wound. Manoj claimed that he was sleeping at the moment, he said.

No suicide note has been found, added the officer.
