West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said her government will aim to make the Deocha-Pachami coal block in Birbhum district operational within 24 months.

The block -- the world's second largest -- has an estimated coal reserve of 2.1 billion tonnes.

"We are very eager to start work on the project immediately. But, some areas are faced with eviction issues. It will take time.

"However, in the portion of land that belongs to us, we will start work in the next seven days, and within 24 months the coal block will be operational," Banerjee said at the 'Bengal Business Conclave' here.

The West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd (WBPDCL) has been alloted the Deocha-Pachami block in the south-western part of Birbhum, and the Dewanganj Harinsingha block in the western fringe of the district.
