A parliamentary panel on public sector undertakings has asked the power ministry to undertake a comprehensive review of the planning process of the electricity transmission system in view of the prevailing anomalies in the sector.
The Committee on Public Sector Undertakings, in a report tabled in Parliament today, said the total transfer capability (TTC) was less than half of the physical capacity of (power transmission) lines.
"Total TTC in March 2016 works out to 21,870 MW as against the total physical (power transmission) capacity of 54,750 MW," the panel said in its report "Planning and Implementation of Transmission Projects by State-run Power Grid Corp".
The committee has asked the power ministry to undertake a comprehensive review of the transmission system planning process keeping in view of the prevailing anomalies in the power sector, constraints being faced by CPSUs and prospective electricity requirement of the country.
It said that such an exercise will help the ministry to plug in the loopholes in the present system and evolve a better road map for their future endeavours.
The panel said, "The national grid should be capable of meeting regional deficit in a particular region like the southern region from a surplus region like western or eastern regions...only then the actual purpose of having a national grid could be considered to be accomplished."
Presently, the inter-regional power transmission capacity stood at 78,050 MW (by September, 2017) as per the power ministry data.
India has added 3,000 MW of transmission capacity till September this fiscal against the targeted 4,200 MW.
