A team of doctors representing the Indian Medical Association and other medical groups today met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, calling for measures to stop violence on health professionals and hospitals.
According to Service Doctors' Forum general secretary, Dr Sajal Biswas, the representatives told the CM that the number of attacks on doctors aggravated following the implementation of the West Bengal Clinical Establishment Act (WBCEA) 2017.
"In 2015, the number of doctors assaulted was 18 which grew to 65 in 2017 after the Act," Biswas claimed.
The team demanded immediate arrests of those involved in assaults on doctors and nurses on duty.
"The chief minister heard us very attentively. She has assured us of looking into our demands. We are happy with the meeting," Biswas told reporters at the state secretariat.
