At least six persons were injured by a herd of wild elephants in the river island Majuli, official sources said today.
According to Majuli Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) Laya Maduri, a heard of around 20 elephants injured six persons yesterday, besides damaging over 22 houses.
They also stamped over 15 cattle, 20 goats besides destroying hundreds of hectors of paddy fields, she said, adding, the district administration has distributed relief materials to the affected people.
"We have requested for two Kunthi elephants from the Kaziranga National Park authority to protect the people here. Kunthi elephants can chase away the heard," Maduri said, adding, that forest guards have already been deployed there.
The SDO further said people were shifted from the area and they were asked to stop making their traditional rice beer, which is common among the missing tribe of Majuli, as it is very favourite for the jumbos.
