Consul general of China in Kolkata, Zha Liyou on Thursday called for more bonhomie between Indian states and Chinese provinces, which he said would augur well for bilateral ties between the two countries.

"Both Kolkata and Kunming are twin sister cities. But the relation between the two is not active. The potential is not fully utilised. There is a need for greater collaboration between them," he said at an interactive session organised by the MCCI here.

Citing an instance, the envoy said such ties among twin cities between China and other countries are much higher -- Japan (250), US (over 200), Russia (140) and Germany (40).

Talking about eastern India, he said the region occupies an important place in the context of China, as it is the land of Lord Buddha.

Zha said there was also need to create awareness about Bengali culture among the Chinese, particularly films and personalities like Satyajit Ray.
