Farmers lay siege of PAP Engineer's office over water release

A large number of today laid siege of the office of Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) Engineer here protesting release of water from Azhiyar Dam to Kerala, when farmers in Tamil Nadu were facing water shortage.

As about 450 cusecs of water was released yesterday to Kerala, the farmers numbering about 2000 from Pollachi, Tirupur, Kangeyam and nearby areas staged the protest demonstration, police said.

There was an agreement between the two states to release 7.25 TMC water to Kerala annually and already 5.5 TMC of water was released so far.

There was time till May to release the remaining quantum of water, the farmers claimed.
 

As Kerala government started drawing water from Siruvani, to compensate the water from Azhiyar, there was the threat of drinking water shortage to Coimbatore, administration released 450 Cusecs of water, which had drawn the ire of farmers in the region.
