Funeral expense assistance of Lankan refugees doubled

Finance Minister O Panneerselvam told the state Assembly that the sum had been increased from Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000.

Further, the relief provided on the event of an unnatural death of a camp inmate was increased from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000.

Earlier, the Public Department policy note tabled by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa before the House said that a total of 67,930 Sri Lankan Tamils were accommodated in 114 camps including two special camps in 28 districts.

Since 1983, 3,04,080 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees had arrived in the state with 2,09,871 of them returning to the country as on March 31 this year, it said.
