Rane said that the hinterland tourism was in a mess as the state had failed to maintain infrastructure.

"Many high spending tourists want to be away from beaches. But we have not been able to provide the required amenities to them," the former chief minister said after moving a cut motion for demands on grants for Tourism Department.

The garbage menace, he said, surrounding the places visited by tourists was sending wrong signals.

"Goa is on the world map of tourism. We are neglecting the goose that lays golden eggs," Rane commented.

The state receives about 25 lakh tourists every year of which about four lakh are from foreign countries and large number of people here are employed in tourism-related activities.
