Goa Legislative Assembly's deputy Speaker Anant Shet resigned today, a day ahead of the election to the post of Speaker for which he is the BJP nominee.

For its part, the Congress will field its MLA, Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco as the nominee on behalf of the opposition.

Shet is set to sail through as the BJP has support of 25 MLAs (21 BJP, 3 Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, and 1 Independent) in the 40-member House where Congress has 9 MLAs.

"Congress legislator Mauvin Godinho will be pro-tem Speaker who will chair the session during election of the Speaker tomorrow morning,"Legislature Secretary N B Subedhar told PTI.

The election for the post was necessitated after Speaker Rajendra Arlekar was inducted as a minister in the Laxmikant Parsekar-led cabinet.

The election for the post of deputy-Speaker is scheduled on January 14 in which BJP has already announced that Vishnu Wagh will be the party nominee.
