Timely intervention by government has helped secure the return of Indian workers who had been stranded near the South African city of Johannesburg, said the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs.
The rescued Indians were working with a company called HDRA ARC at the camp site of Secunda, 150km from Johannesburg, according to a release here.
They had telephoned Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi to narrate their plight, the release said.
"About 580 Indian workers stranded in Johannesburg have been rescued with the immediate intervention of Ravi yesterday," the release stated.
"Of the rescued workers, about 154 have boarded their flight to return to India. Yesterday, about 18 workers returned. The remaining stranded workers are expected to return in a day or two," the release added.
