The Gujarat government has written to the Centre to upgrade BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's security cover during his election tours outside the state.

"We have written to the Centre to upgrade Modi's security outside the state due to threats during election rallies," Additional Chief Secretary (Home) S K Nanda told PTI.

"The security cover provided to Modi during his tours outside the state is not at par with what he gets when he is in Gujarat," Nanda said.

Last week, Modi was anointed as BJP's prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

The National Security Guards (NSG), which is responsible for protecting Modi, had upgraded his security at his residence after he was named the BJP poll campaign chief in June.

Modi, whose travels outside Gujarat have increased significantly, has been on the hit list of all major terror groups active.

Currently he enjoys a 'Z++' security cover by the NSG.
