Wearing of helmets has been made compulsory for two-wheeler riders in Hailakandi district of Assam with immediate effect, in view of increasing road accidents in the district.

An order issued by the district administration yesterday made it mandatory for two-wheeler riders to wear helmets saying most of the casualties resulting from head injury were due to non-wearing of protective headgears.

Punitive action as per law would be initiated against those defying the order, it said.

The order also said that the protective headgears worn by the riders should conform to standards.

Owners or managers of fuel filling stations were also asked not to sell fuel to two-wheeler riders without helmets.
