The striking students in Haryana's Karsola village today ended their stir after the state government announced that their school would be upgraded to senior secondary level.

More than 50 girls of the Karsola Government High School had gone on an indefinite hunger strike yesterday demanding that their institute have classes till standard XII.

They called off their strike after Jind SDM Ashwini Mallick assured them that the government had started the process of having their school upgraded and that it would be completed in the next 15 days.

Earlier in the day, eight students were taken to the Julana community health centre after they complained of nausea. The condition of two has been stated as serious, Kasola sarpanch Rajpal said.

"Such incidents show that the state's 'Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao' programme is a failure. Even today, girls have to fight for their education, " former minister Satyanarayan Lathar alleged.

In another incident in Jind, students in Muana village locked the gates of their school alleging that there were not enough teachers at the institute.

However, later, authorities and teachers opened the gates of the Muana Government Secondary School with the help of local BJP leader Amarpal Rana.

The Block Education Officer Naresh Verma has asked the school's principal to explain the reason behind the shortage of teachers.
