Madras High Court today permitted the wife of a Sri Lankan detenu to see him in hospital.
Chenduran, a Sri Lankan national, was in detention under the Foreigners Act at a refugee camp on March 4. When he staged a fast on March 7, demanding withdrawal of the detention orders, he was arrested and lodged in Vellore Central Prison.
As he continued his fast, he fell unconscious and was admitted to the Vellore Government Hospital there.

His wife, Mangayarkarasi, and her daughter went to Vellore Government Hospital to see him, but police prevented them from entering into the ward where he was admitted, following which she filed a habeas corpus plea.
She sought a direction to authorities to permit her and her daughter to see him in the hospital and to serve him till he is discharged. A Division Bench of Justice V Dhanapalan and Justice G Chokkalingam permitted her to see him.
The family came to Tamil Nadu due to ethnic problem in Sri Lanka in April 2011 as refugees.
She had also filed another HCP alleging that a sub-inspector Murali of Q Branch demanded Rs 2 lakh from her husband to prepare a report in his favour but he refused to pay which resulted in his being detained under Foreigner's Act.
The Bench ordered issue of notice to Deputy Secretary , Public Department, the SP 'Q' Branch and SI Murali to submit their reply within two weeks.
