HC orders removal of garbage from area around Mumbai airport

The Bombay High Court today asked the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai to devise a policy to ensure that the area within ten km radius of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport here remains garbage-free.

The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by lawyer Datta Mane which points out that garbage in the surrounding area attracts birds, which leads to incidents of 'bird-hits' (birds running into flights).

The division bench headed by Justice Abhay Oka asked the MCGM to formulate a scheme to deal with the issue and file compliance report by January 9.

The petition says that apart from the hazard of bird-hits, local residents too are fed up with birds flocking there.

Slaughter houses, meat shops and dumping grounds cannot be allowed within a 10 km radius of the airport premises, the PIL says.
