Justice H N Nagamohan Das granted the stay on the proceedings initiated against Naveen Soorinje when the criminal petition filed by Soorinje seeking quashing of the proceedings against him came up for hearing.

Soorinje had also challenged the order of cognisance taken by the local court.

Soorinje in his petition submitted that he had only done his duty as a reporter and had no role to play in the alleged attack.

A local court in Mangalore had rejected his bail petition but the High Court subsequently granted him the relief. Soorinje was arrested last month.

On July 28, over 12 students, including girls, partying at a homestay on the outskirts of Mangalore were targetted by activists allegedly belonging to 'Hindu Jagarana Vedike', who accused them of indulging in "immoral activities".
