The Union Home Ministry will challenge an order by the Central Administrative Tribunal staying an inquiry against a Gujarat-cadre IPS officer, who had carried out a probe against a top official of the Uranium Corporation of India Ltd without permission, an official said.
Rajnish Rai, the 1992-batch IPS officer, who had also probed the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh alleged fake encounter case in Gujarat, was investigated by the home ministry but got a reprieve from a Hyderabad bench of the CAT recently.
The CAT stayed the inquiry against Rai for probing the alleged"misconduct by the chairman-cum-managing director of the Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL) in Jharkhand without permission.
"We will soon challenge the CAT order in the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad," a home ministry official said.
Rai is currently posted in Chittoor as Inspector General of the CRPF.
During his tenure as Chief Vigilance Officer with UCIL, Rai is reported to have unearthed alleged corruption running into crores in 2015.
Rai is said to have submitted his findings from UCIL to the CBI for which he was chargesheeted in August this year by the home affairs ministry as the probe was allegedly conducted without permission.
Rai has also arrested several police officers including ex-IPS officer D G Vanzara in 2007 during Sohrabuddin alleged fake encounter probe. He was then posted in Gujarat CID (crime).
