IIT-Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) and Jindal Stainless have come together to introduce a 3-credit course on stainless steel and advanced ferrous alloys.

This is a part of IIT-KGP's post-graduate curriculum for the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Jindal Stainless said in a release on Thursday.

The course shall comprise the study of stainless steel and the uniqueness of its various grades, behavioural and forming characteristics, determination of life-cycle cost and an understanding of the entire gamut of applications, along wit advanced ferrous alloys, it said.

The programme will commence as an elective course from the autumn semester (July-November 2019) of the institute, with an initial batch of around 50-60 students.

"As a green metal, stainless steel has the potential to re-imagine sustainability. With IIT Kharagpur's expertise, we will be able to drive awareness among the future Indian engineers," Jindal Stainless Director S Bhattacharya said.

The course curriculum will also give real-time exposure of stainless steel fabrication to students through visits to the manufacturing units of Jindal Stainless in Hisar and Pathredi in Haryana, the release added.
