India today gave USD one million as to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for providing food and medicines to Palestine refugees.

UNRWA provides assistance to some five million registered Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and in the Palestine.

Spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs Syed Akbaruddin said the financial assistance to the UN agency has been given as part of India's annual contribution to it.

UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions from UN member-states.

UNRWA Commissioner General Filippo Grandi, who had a meeting with senior officials in the MEA today, thanked India for its continuous support to the UN agency.

"India has been supporting the humanitarian efforts. We want India to expand the cooperation further," he said.

Grandi said officials in MEA have asked him to make a proposal for expansion of India's assistance for Palestine refugees.
