The first edition of the India International Kolkata Trade Fair (IIKTF), jointly organized by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCC&I) and G S Marketing Associates, was inaugurated today.

Trade fairs are excellent platforms to conduct business both in terms of national and international participation, West Bengal Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said after inaugurating the IITKF.

Such a fair provides an ideal forum with access to the market, information about market trends to participants and an opportunity to assess opinions, he said.

The fair with 305 stalls will continue till June 11.

"Earlier there was not much interest in doing business in the state, but the situation has witnessed a sea change under the Mamata Banerjee government," Hakim said.

Speaking on the occasion, the BCC&I President Chandra Sekhar Ghosh said, "If we have more such trade fairs, there will be a rise in people to people interaction and the spirit of entrepreneurship will develop."

"Such platforms are great for initiating link between buyer and seller. I request the Bengal Chamber to initiate classes in entrepreneurship where young people can come and learn not just about manufacturing product but learn how & where to sell it," he said.

The Partner Country of the IIKTF is Bangladesh and the Focus Country is Thailand and Sri Lanka this year.

Turkey, Egypt, China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Myanmar and Netherlands are participating in the fair, said Ghosh, also the CMD of Bandhan Bank.
