'Inhalation of mud' led to US man's death: Post-mortem report

'Inhalation of mud' led to the death of US national Caitanya Lila Holt after he fell down in a paddy field while being chased by villagers upon suspicions of being a thief, his post-mortem report has provisionally concluded.

"The provisional cause of death has been identified as aspiration of grey-brownish matter. There are multiple injuries on the body, but they are non-fatal," a senior doctor from the Goa Medical College and Hospital said today.

The post-mortem was conducted last evening at GMC.

30-year-old Holt on Tuesday died after he fell down in a sludgy paddy field while being chased by some villagers in Korgao who mistook him for a thief.
 

When contacted, Superintendent of Police (North Goa), Umesh Gaonkar, refused to divulge further details of the post- mortem, saying that the case is under investigation.

Meanwhile, sources at the GMC's Forensic Science Department said they have preserved the viscera samples of Holt and the same will be sent for further examination.

US Consulate officials are already in Goa as the investigation is on into the case. They had yesterday visited the place where Holt died as also the Pernem police station, where they were apprised of the inquiry.
