JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik was today detained by the police while he was on his way to Anantnag for an election boycott campaign.

Malik, who was scheduled to address a public gathering at Lal Chowk area of Anantnag in south Kashmir, was detained by police at Pampore, said a JKLF spokesman.

He said police had laid siege at many places on the road leading to Anantnag and when the JKLF delegation, led by Malik, reached Sempora Pampore, police stopped it and detained its members.

However, another JKLF delegation, led by its zonal president Noor Muhammad Kalwal, managed to reach Anantnag town where the leaders of the delegation addressed a gathering at Jamia Masjid, the spokesman said.

They asked the people to stay away from the "so-called elections", he added.

Anantnag Assembly segment is going to by-poll on June 22. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti is the PDP candidate from Anantnag. The by-poll was necessitated by the death of the then Chief Minister and Mehbooba's father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in January.
