In a jumbo feast, 49 elephants were today offered a sumptuous meal on the occasion of 'Ganapathy pooja' and 'aanayoot' at the Vadakkumnnathan temple here famous for the annual Pooram festival.

The pooja and 'anayoot' (feeding of elephant), held once in four years, was performed by the Mel Santhi (Chief priest) of the temple Kottambully Narayanan Namboodiri.

The priest inaugurated the ceremony by giving an elephantine morsel to the youngest elephant among the group.

Braving heavy rains, a large number of people thronged the temple to witness the jumbo event.
