A new government policy which safeguards the revival of regional languages while teaching English to students should be formulated, said Mukhyamantri Chandru, President of Kannada Development Authority here today.
At a press meet held at the deputy commissioner's office Chandru said he would put forward demand to the government to make Kannada mandatory in all sectors.
A recent Supreme Court judgement which directed that it was not mandatory to teach Kannada would adversely affect regional languages. He said English advertisements should not be carried in Kannada dailies.
He urged the district administrations to encourage parents to send children to Kannada medium schools. He said that students who are interested in studying Kannada would be given scholarships. At present 120 students who pursue higher studies in Kannada were being given scholarships.
