Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today instructed Irrigation, Handloom and Textile Minister Ranjit Dutta to rush to Lakhimpur where a a major fire engulfed areas near Surya Cinema Hall in the town.
The Chief Minister, who is in Shillong to attend the NEC plenary meeting, also instructed Deputy Commissioner of the district to take steps to douse the fire and take stock of the extent of damage and take remedial steps, officials here said.
A major fire broke out in a textile merchandise shop in Lakhimpur with the billowing fire engulfing several shops in the area, they said.
Several fire tenders battled to bring the fire under control which was suspected to have been caused by an electric short circuit, they added.
