LG opens smart classrooms, SDMC plans proj at 14 more schools

Press Trust of India  |  New Delhi

Lt Governor Najeeb Jung today inaugurated smart classrooms at a municipal school in south Delhi, which has been upgraded with technology as part of a project to enhance infrastructure facilities.

A primary school in Lajpat Nagar-III area has been equipped with smart classrooms, CCTV cameras and library.

The South Municipal Corporation's Education Department has inked MoUs with eight NGOs for an overall transformation of its 15 primary schools, the SDMC said.

Jung referred to his stay in while his children were studying in a government school.

"The teachers have a major responsibility for instilling the essence of good behaviour, moral values and patriotism in students by their own decent behaviour and habits. The success of education will be termed relevant if the passed out students are possessing adequate sensitivity apart from zeal to work religion, caste, economic situation and regional considerations," he said.

The SDMC had embarked on an ambitious programme -- School Quality Enhancement Programme (SQEP) in 2015 to revitalise the quality of primary schools with the objective of ensuring each child, especially the most disadvantaged, an excellent education comparable to the best private or public schools.

The programme focuses on the keenness of the SDMC on high-quality learning in SDMC primary schools through an innovative partnership with credible NGOs.

"Our efforts resulted in increase in enrollment from 10 students to 290 students within a short span of a year or so apart from putting an end to the tendency of dropout," SDMC Commissioner P K Goel said.

He said by the end of March 2017, 25 more primary schools will be brought under the ambit of the programme, which will take the number of such schools to 40.

Goel said a cluster of 10 to 15 nearby schools will be linked to such schools in order to provide them an opportunity to replicate the model.
