State-owned power utility Mahavitaran said here today that load-shedding for around three to six hours would continue across Maharashtra, even as it managed to tie-up 1,485 MW to meet the shortfall which arose after private power generating stations shut down.

According to Mahavitaran, two units of 660 MW each operated by Adani Power, a 600 MW unit of JSW Energy and a 500 MW unit operated by India bulls Power shut operations due to technical problems, while there is also a 500 MW drop in supply from the central grid.

"We have tied up 1,485 MW to meet a shortfall of 3,000 MW. We are drawing 1,200 MW from the central power exchange, while 285 MW is being taken under the provision of emergency electricity purchase," a senior Mahavitaran official said.

"Despite the tie-up, there is a shortfall of almost 2,000 MW. Therefore, we will have to resort to loadshedding of for around three to six hours," he said.

Adani has already told Mahavitaran that it would restore operations on unit 3 which generates 660 MW by tomorrow and unit 2 which generates 660 MW by June 4.

Indiabulls Power's 270 MW unit in Amravati and Mahagenco's 210 MW unit in Parli have already commenced operations, the official said.

"Adani has also informed Mahavitaran that foreign consultants are being consulted due to the peculiarity of the technical problem," the official said.

Mahavitaran, which is also known as the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL), supplies power to almost the entire state of Maharashtra, except pockets of the financial capital, which are supplied by the state-run Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply & Transport (BEST), besides private sector players like Reliance, as well as Tata Power.

Maharashtra's peak demand is more than 15,500 MW and a shortfall in supply has forced the electricity distribution company to resort to load shedding.
