Expressing concern over alleged anti-India activities in JNU campus in New Delhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan today said that the country should seriously think on the issue, especially why such wrong tendencies were growing in such an educational institution.

"The question is not whether to demand or not taking action against JNU students. There is a need to seriously think why such wrong tendencies are breeding in such an institution," Mahajan told reporters on the sidelines of a programme here.

Referring to the demonstration in JNU over the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, the Lok Sabha Speaker asked, "Why is such kind of thinking growing in support of a person who was proved guilty by the court and was awarded capital punishment? Not just a couple of political parties, but the entire country should seriously ponder over it."

A group of students on Tuesday held an event on the JNU campus and allegedly shouted slogans against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in 2013.

JNU students union president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested today in connection with a case of sedition and criminal conspiracy over holding of the event there.

The JNU administration has instituted a "disciplinary" inquiry as to how the event took place despite withdrawal of permission and said it will wait for the probe report before taking any further action.

Earlier, after inaugurating the three-day Forest Fair, Mahajan expressed concern over decreasing knowledge about Ayurvedic medicines and herbs in forest areas.

"Because of climate change, availability of ayurvedic medicines is reducing in forest areas and knowledge about them too is declining. Therefore, we must conserve them and should inform the young generation residing in villages near forests about their importance," she said.
