Man gets 5 years of RI for driving wife to commit suicide

A local court here has sentenced a man to five years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with a two-year-old case of abetment of his wife's suicide.

Mahila Court Judge N Krishnan held Venkatesh of Vazhapadi in the district guilty of torturing his wife and driving her to commit suicide and sentenced him to two years and five years RI respectively.

The sentences would run concurrently. The Judge also imposed a total fine of Rs 2,000.

Venaktesh, a farm labourer, married 21-year-old Priya in November, 2009. He used to drink liquor and frequently quarreled with his wife and beat her up.
 

She committed suicide on February 12, 2012 by hanging herself in their house.

On a complaint from her father that she took the extreme step because she was unable to bear the torture by her husband, police registered a case and arrested Venkatesh.
