Union Minister of state for Home Affairs Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary today said mass usage of internet has become a major challenge for policing in the country and urged the police also to take up 'smart policing' in a big way.
"The crime scenario across the country has drastically changed the society because of mass usage of internet and this has become a major challenge," Chaudhary said while addressing the passing out parades of 230 trainees of the 41st basic course of the North Eastern Police Academy police at Umsaw near here.
The police, he said, should be able to contain crime with new approaches of 'smart policing'.

Admitting that the entire North Eastern region is having its own challenges for the police force, the Union Minister of state said, "The North Eastern region is having more than 200 communities, speaking their own languages and dialects and also practising their own cultures and as such the police should be highly sensitive."
He urged the new recruits to show respect to all the citizens of the country, particularly the elderly and women, he said.
The force, he said, should be all the more sensitive while dealing with people in the region.
The Minister also announced that the central government has approved hike of the Welfare Grant for the welfare of the trainees and employees of the NEPA from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore.
NEPA director D R Doley Barman informed that 230 trainees of the 41st batch successfully completed their 48 weeks gruelling training at the institute.
Among them, 71 are in the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police and 159 Sub-Inspectors. 47 are from Meghalaya, 5 from Arunachal Pradesh, 11 from Mizoram and 167 are from Manipur.
