The Madhya Pradesh High Court today ordered an interim stay on a Medical Council of India (MCI) order suspending the registration of six government doctors of the MY Hospital including its superintendent for unethical drug trial on patients.

Justice S C Sharma of the Indore bench of the MP High Court granted the stay on the MCI's order suspending V S Paul (superintendent), Pali Rastogi, Anil Bharani, Ashish Patel, Ujwal Sardesari and Abhay Paliwal.

Former additional advocate general Sunil Jain, who represented the doctors, told reporters, "The MCI did not respond to the high court's notice issued earlier. After which, the single bench today stayed the MCI's July order."

"In the MCI order, the Madhya Pradesh Medical Council was directed to suspend the registration of these doctors for three months," he added.

Jain said the doctors in their petition had alleged that the MCI misused the rules and regulations in an old case of drug trial and issued orders against them without giving chance to present their side.

Several cases of unethical drug trial had come to light between 2010 and 2013 in Indore.

It was alleged that the doctors conducted drug trial on poor patients under the pretext of treatment.
